Racing through the blackness of space is the LEGO Star Wars 6207 A-wing Fighter. Starfighter pilots battled the odds to survive in the intense dogfights and turbolaser fire. Among the best of the fighters, A-Wings (also known as “Slims”) made Imperials think twice before engaging in combat. With the fastest fighter in the Rebel Alliance arsenal, A-wing jocks liked to remind everyone else that hey were the fastest things in space. All pilots tended to have large egos, but A-wing pilots tended to be the worst. Prized by some commanders, not everyone was fond of the A-wings, especially Rogue Squadron.
Based off the design of the Eta-2 Actis-class light interceptor (also known as the Jedi Interceptor, being flown almost exclusively by Jedi pilots), the A-Wing is little more than a cockpit with overly large engines. And laser cannons, of course. These speedy little craft took a good deal of skill to handle; their speed meant that taking a hard turn might throw the craft into a deadly spin or crash into enemy ships. Built for rapid hit and fade attacks, these fighters could slag capital ship weapons and tear through squadrons of enemy starfighters before anyone knew what happened. However, their light shields and armor left them more vulnerable if anything did catch up to them. These fighters aren’t for cowardly LEGO pilots, but for men and women of all species that are willing to stand up for what is right and bring evildoers to justice. The most famous A-wing pilot was Arvel Crynyd, who crashed into the bridge of the Super Star Destroyer Executor during the Battle of Endor, causing it to fall into the second Death Star, turning the tide of the battle in favor of the Rebel Alliance. Another of the starfighters that were released for the 2006 Classic Star Wars line, the LEGO 6207 A-Wing Fighter set was the second time that the A-wing has appeared. This set includes the A-wing, hanger train as well as the A-wing mechanic mini figure.
The pilot is dressed is a green uniform with localized environment controls on the front of his suit. With a daredevil type helmet and a standardized smiling face, the minifigure isn’t so much a specific character as a generic pilot. The mechanic is similarly bland, with the same generic smiling face, which is flesh colored. Wearing a grey jumpsuit and matching helmet, he’s ready and able to work on any fighter the Rebel Alliance might need fixing. The hanger train is a relatively simple vehicle. With room enough for two people or some supplies, there are two sections, the first containing the controls and the second holding the ship entrance ladder.
The fighter itself is a great remake of the A-Wing from the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi movie. The red trim and decals make the vehicle look like a fast predator, instead of prey. The large engines and maneuvering props are exactly as portrayed in the movie, and the laser cannons can even swivel to surprise the enemy! Compared to the other versions, this craft is much sleeker than the version of the 7134 A-Wing fighter set from 200 and more to scale than the version included in the 7754 Home One Mon Calamari Star Cruiser from 2009.
The 194-piece set is recommended by LEGO for builders age 7 to 12. The set is not very difficult to build, including relatively few moving parts and containing no special weapons, flick-to-fire missile or other special features. While that might seem to decrease its playability, get this fighter into a dogfight with Imperial Ties and you’ll find out it has just as much to offer as anything else. A great set for younger builders working their way up, it also provides a lot of fun.
