Released in April 2011, the LEGO 4183 The Mill set allows you to recreate the hilarious antics of the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The set includes the rickety old mill, a chest with the heart of Davy Jones and four LEGO mini figures. The minifigures included in the set are Captain Jack Sparrow, William Turner, the former Admiral Norrington and Hadras (one of Davy Jone’s watery pirates). The set also contains part of the poster that has been released with this collection. What does the poster reveal? You’ll have to get all the sets to find out!
The tall old mill has the look of many European 16th century buildings, such as the front archway and the rounded top of the windows. The long vines and tall grass that drape the building, along with the busted shutters and holes in the roof, make the building actually look old. The belfry can be climbed and fought in, though you can’t actually climb up to the top as in the movie. Pulling the rope will ring the bell though, a very nice touch. Minifigures can also use to rope to swing in to one another, a definite plus! The interior of the mill is open in the back and holds as surprising number of special pieces, including a new bucket with a handle, a silver fish, and a new clear bottle piece.
The gigantic wheel rested peacefully in its places for ages, but the pirates fighting over the key have knocked it loose and gotten it rolling! Any minifigures who wish to keep their lives need to run really fast as the wheel rolls, because at 10 inches (25 cm) tall and 8 inches (20 cm) wide, this wheel is large enough for one pirate to stand comfortably inside and very heavy (for a minifigure). There is a special lever on the back of the set, pushing it down will pop the wheel out of its place and start it rolling!
As is expected of the Pirates collection, the minifigures are very detailed! Captain Jack Sparrow has his typical mop of hair and outlandish pirate clothes. William Turner looks fine in his adventuring getup, and the sword and scabbard fit him well. The former Admiral Norrington looks a bit beat up, with his unshaven beard, unruly hair and messed up uniform; he also wears a sword belt. Hadras is another thing entirely. His body is covered with shells and barnacles and he wears the shell on his head from the movie. With three cutlasses and a pistol, this is going to be one interesting fight! Jack also has his special compass and what would this set be without the key to fight over? The set has spares for both, just in case.
This set, though full of adventure, suspense and hilarity, is not likely one that younger builders will be able to put together on their own. The wheel is made out of hinges, and getting the huge number of them to line up and fit correctly can be a tedious process. The bell must also be tied to the string, which younger builders might find a hard as well. Though this is the case, the set will provide many long hours of enjoyment, so this might be a set that parents can use to bond with their children. Jack has the key and is about to open the chest when Will takes the key! He loses it to Norrington, who looses it back to Jack while he’s fighting with Will! Hadras has snuck up and is running away with the chest, but will he make it far before being hit by the rolling wheel? With all this adventure and fun at your fingertips, all you have to do is let this wonderful set take you there!
