Straight out of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the LEGO 4195 Queen Anne’s Revenge hit LEGO fans in April 2011 with suck a fury. The, blood red sails, skull and crossbones flag, bone detailing and the six LEGO mini figures crew (Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward “Blackbeard” Teach, Angelica, Quartermaster, pirate chef and two zombie pirates, not counting the skeletons) will make any builder quake in their boots! Blackbeard, the pirate who all pirates fear, is back!
A magnificent ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge is 20 inches (50 cm) tall and 25 inches (66cm) long. Her sleek lines, excellent rigging and exquisite detailing make her at once beautiful and deadly to behold, and you’d better hope you never meet her on the high seas. Although the ship has space for eight cannons, sadly it only has three. The crew might not know their way around the ship, but Blackbeard’s special sword gives him the ability to control the rigging and make the ship come to life, so any potential mutineers should be very, very careful. The three masts, cannons, a working rudder and anchor make this a very realistic ship indeed, true to the great age of piracy.
From his raised captain’s quarters Blackbeard watches as Jack and the motley crew attempt to take over the ship, but will they be able to gain control before he steps into the action? Though the ship does not have a second deck, the captain’s quarters and the helm are raised above the deck as in the movie. Blackbeard’s quarters are quite lavish, with balconies for minifigures to see the waters on either side of the ship and the helm has the ability to detach to show the cabin’s interior, which features a bit of extra storage space. The large bone lantern (gives off lots of light and makes the stained glass windows look pretty) and the bone detailing around the ship, will remind anyone of how deadly this ship is.
While the ship itself might be impressive, she is nothing without her crew. Captain Jack Sparrow is decked out almost exactly as in the movie, crazy hair, hat and all. Angelica wears a blouse and sailor pants, with her hair stuffed under a feathered hat. Among Angelica’s possessions is the Voodoo doll of Jack. The unlucky chef is decked out with a tan hat, apron and sailor’s shirt and vest, while the zombie pirates wear tattered clothing and have lots of scars and tattoos. Blackbeard himself is decked out in midnight black coat and belt, with a huge beard and flaming wicks coming out from underneath his large hat. A terrifying figure to behold, you’ll never want to meet him.
To say that a build this big and this awesome isn’t going to be easy is a monumental understatement. This 1097-piece set is recommended by the LEGO Company for builders age 9 to 16. Suffice to say, older builders will have trouble with this one, not to mention younger builders. The 4195 Queen Anne’s Revenge set will take skilled builders hours to complete, so make sure you have a large, flat surface to work on and lots of time to work. Despite the challenge, will you become a member of Blackbeard’s crew and sail on the Queen Anne’s Revenge for glory, adventure and loot? Only you can decide, but this is a must have set for any LEGO Pirate fan!
