One of the things needed for the profane ritual of the Fountain of Youth is a mermaid tear, from that beautiful and deadly creature of myth and legend. Feared by sailors of all nations, these creatures can snatch a man from his ship and drag him to the depths. The only place to hunt these creatures is Whitecap Bay, so to Whitecap bay Blackbeard has gone.
Plotting to entice the mermaids and then drive them to shore with bombs and his fiery ship blasts, Blackbeard works to gain eternal life. Putting some of the men out in rowboats to act as bait for the mermaids, and now there’s only to light the fire, sing and wait for the mermaids to show…
Released in April 2011, about the same time as the movie, the LEGO 4194 is the first set to include mermaids. Containing the Lighthouse, attached keep, along with two rowboats, nets and six LEGO mini figures (Captain Jack Sparrow, the preacher Philip Smith, Scrum the singer, the Zombie Gunner and mermaids Syrena and Tamara).
The lighthouse is an ancient building, with a large vat of whale oil and a focusing glass for the light. Three stories tall, the tower is 10 inches (25 cm) tall and 12 inches (30 cm) wide. The lowest level holds the entrance and some accessories necessary for pirate life. The middle room holds wheels for turning the lens, while the top level houses the light brick that stands in for the movie fire. The whale oil barrel sits next to the tower, but can be used to explode the tower like Jack did in the movie nonetheless. The barrel can be made to tip over, igniting all the oil at once and collapse the tower. The middle walls of the tower can be knocked out, causing the lamp room to fall in turn. So if the rowboats and nets aren’t working, what is a minifigure to do? Get the net cannon of course! The secondary building in the keep holds a net cannon of course, and this working cannon can be moved out on its rails to fire a net into the water to capture the mermaids. While this didn’t happen in the movie, it might help save minifigure lives in the fight to capture a mermaid.
The light can shine on the calm waters of the cove, but the pirates really need bait to catch the mermaids. As such there are two rowboats included in the set so that the pirates can row out onto the water. Each rowboat holds oars, a net and a lantern, all necessary equipment for mermaid hunting. These rowboats could hold four or five pirates armed to the teeth, though sadly this set does not include that many pirates.
Like all of the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean minifigures, these characters are very detailed and realistic. Tamara and Syrena both have tails and carry the seaweed whips from the movie, along with the long hair. Captain Jack Sparrow is decked out with this hat and hair and all his usual effects. The Zombie gunner is covered in tattoos (as in the movie) and wears the same tattered clothing. The preacher Philip Smith wears a nicer blue tunic and shorter brown hair, though he is missing his Bible. Scrum looks like he’s been away at sea for a while with his unshaven face, dirty shirt and piratey hat!
A complicated build with lots of moving parts of special mechanisms, this set is recommended for builders age 7 to 14. A large set at 746 pieces, this will take some time to build for even the most skilled builders, so take your time and enjoy it. As with all the Pirates of the Caribbean sets, this set contains a poster revealing a special something. While Blackbeard and Angelica are not included in this set, adding in the 4195 Queen Anne’s Revenge would add both those characters and more pirates to the mix, allowing you to accurately recreate the epic movie scene. Will Jack and the others be able to capture a mermaid, or will they all be dragged to the bottom? Only you can decide how Blackbeard’s hunt will go!
