While many have gone off in search of the Fountain of Youth, some respectable scientists believe it to be only a myth. Good thing that Captain Jack Sparrow isn’t respectable or a scientist! Racing against time, the English crown and the Spaniards to find the fountain; by chance Jack has found himself stuck aboard Blackbeard’s nightmare ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge! In the LEGO 4192, Barbossa is after the Fountain of youth, but not for the water. No, Barbosa wants to kill Blackbeard for taking his ship, crew and leg with his magic powers. The long journey and trek has led them all in to the secret cavern holding the Fountain of Youth. Released on April 18, 2011 around the time of the movie, this set allows you to recreate the desperate struggle to drink of the fountain’s waters and the duel for revenge. The set contains the Fountain of Youth, the watery entrance to the Fountain’s chamber and three LEGO mini figures (Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Hector Barbossa and Captain Edward “Blackbeard” Teach).
While the Fountain of youth in this set doesn’t follow the design from the On Stranger Tides movie, it does follow a more traditional idea of what the Fountain looked like. While the movie version resembled a hollow rock that dripped water, while this version looks like a normal fountain set on a raised dais and is 3 inches (7 cm) tall. The steps leading up to the fountain are intricate and ornate, but are covered in moss. Blue fire and the raising water lend to the unique features of the Fountain and make it look very magical indeed. The magical goblets of Ponce de Leon are also included, and just to let you know what the cost of Life will be, a skeleton lies on the steps leading up to the Fountain.
There is also the watery entrance in this set. Designed to look like a waterfall, this part of the set is truer to the movie. The archway is a beautiful piece of scenery and architecture, but it also is functional. The water of the waterfall is not made of solid bricks but plastic strips that would allow any minifigure to walk through it like they were walking through water. At over 5 inches (12 cm) wide and 4 inches (10 cm) tall, you can march a whole army through for an outrageous battle!
The minifigures in this set are very detailed and magnificent reproductions of the movie characters, typical of the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean collection. Captain Jack Sparrow is decked out in his finest, with the amazing hair, headband and colorful pirate clothes. He also has his wild map and magical compass. Captain Barbossa wears an Admiral uniform and hat, though he really is out for his own gain. With his peg leg and sword belt, he looks exactly as he does in the movie. The Blackbeard himself is decked out in midnight black coat, with a huge beard and flaming wicks coming out from underneath his large hat. He also carries the huge magical sword that allows him to control the rigging on a ship and gives him other special abilities. A terrifying figure to behold, you’ll never want to meet him. Sadly, none of the normal pirates, Angelica or the Spaniards are present in this set, for their presence would’ve allowed builders to have even bigger fights.
Recommended by the LEGO Company for builders Age 6 to 12, this is a nice, 128-piece set to build the confidence of younger builders and provide lots of exciting adventures and battles. As with all the Pirates of the Caribbean sets, this set contains a poster revealing a special something. Will Barbossa poison Blackbeard and take the Queen Anne’s Revenge for himself? Will Jack gain life, or will he pass it by to do the right thing? Only you can control the outcome of the epic duels, so start building matey!
